Causes of hearing problem in children

What causes ear infections or problems in kids? Few common ear diseases may affect kids life skills.

Acute otitis media (AOM) is an infection that includes kids ear pain, fever, and evidence of middle ear inflammation with fluid which is also called effusions.

Otitis media with effusion (OME) is fluid in the middle ear (behind the eardrum) without signs of any infection. The eustachian tubes soak ears fluid to the back of the throat. However, when these tubes are blocked or swollen, fluid can build up in the ear, causing these conditions.

Causes of AOM or OME include exposure to allergies, smoking, respiratory infections, and wrong drinking habits like while lying on one’s back. Avoid these risks may help to cure these hearing problems.

Treatment is the health tips for child health

  • To treat pain with analgesic kids ear drops or non-prescribed medicines such as acetaminophen.
  • Otitis media with effusion: Use of antihistamines, decongestants, and antibiotics is not recommended routine-wise. Children should have a hearing test if OME lasts more than 3 months or when there are doubts of listening to, language, or learning issues.
  • To treat Acute otitis media antibiotics are given to the kids who are younger than 6 months as these children don’t have strong immune systems to fight infections. Between 6 months to 2 years, children may be given antibiotics, the certainty of diagnosis, and the seriousness of the infection. Children with less severe illness and an uncertain diagnosis may be observed for 48 to 72 hours without giving them antibiotics. Most children have shown improvement, but if they do not improve within 48 to 72 hours, they may be given antibiotics.
  • Tympanostomy tubes are inserted when OME does not go away more than 3 months, there is repeated AOM (3 to 4 treatments over 6 months or 1 year), or there is any vital hearing loss.

These days many kids are being diagnosed with hearing loss, and many treatments for kids are becoming saviors. Unfortunately, in some cases, hearing loss is not treatable which has become a hurdle in many kids life skills and children’s education plans. However, there are many companies that have come up with potential hearing aids for kids that have become powerful hacks for life.
